What's up in Texas?
Recreational cannabis and medical cannabis are both illegal. Low-THC cannabis oil is technically legal for patients with intractable epilepsy, but the law requires that doctors “prescribe” it (as opposed to “recommend” it), which puts them at risk of breaking federal law. The Texas legislature only meets every two years, and the next session doesn’t take place until 2019, so cannabis policy reform will not be possible in Texas until then.
Republican Governor Greg Abbott has not declared his support for expanding medical cannabis beyond low-THC oil. Lupe Valdez, the Democratic Party’s candidate for governor, has said that she supports legalizing medical cannabis and is open to legalizing recreational cannabis if society is ready to accept it.
